System Center Configuration Manager

IntroductionMost SCCM customers are trying to limit the number of servers they need for the SCCM environment. And for many good reasons. Having a server, on each remote office to support clients can be very expensive for some customers. Most of the workloads can be provided by other desktop clients by making them distribution points or enabling services like BranchCache or Peer Cache. But one important function that required a full server Operating Systems is the option to provide PXE boot. So, If you have been doing OS deployment using SCCM for many years, you will most likely love this new feature…

Today I got a call from a customer that was playing around with OSD in System Center Configuration Manager and the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT). He wanted to know where he could find a list of all the Time Zones Names, so he could change the default “Pacific Standard Time” to something else. But where can you find a list of all the “TimeZoneName”?Instead of using some old reference list on TechNet or MSDN, you can simply use the good old Time Zone Utility (Tzutil), that can be used to view and manage available time zones. You can run Tzutil from…

Today I got a call from a System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM/ConfigMgr) customer that wanted to automate the creation of device collections for each SCCM client version, that was in their environment. I guess summer time means “time to cleanup/fix all the broken clients” :-)A couple of years ago I create another similar script for CU updates: https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/SCCM-Creating-Collections-f334c7f0 but this time I wanted to make the script simpler, fully automated and only create the collections that was needed by the customer. This script will pull a list of all the client versions from the SCCM site server, and create a collection…

Friday Microsoft released the 1602 update to System Center Configuration Manager, and Monday morning I had a scheduled a new SCCM/Intune hybrid project starting at one of my customers. Perfect timing! The customer was already on 1511 and they provided me with a newly created admin account. I got “Full Admin” rights to SCCM and even Domain Admin. To get the new build you might have to run a PowerShell script on the CAS or the Primary Server. More info here: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/configmgrteam/2016/03/11/now-available-update-1602-for-system-center-configuration-manager/ The update was downloaded, but the update didn’t show up in the console. At lest not for my user account.…
